In honor of Labor Day, it seemed fitting to share this anecdote from my recent experience as a crossing guard. This exchange with a 5-year old girl took place last winter, following my return from a day away at a long-planned cross-country ski trip.
Girl: “Where were you yesterday?” Sheila: “I was on a ski trip.” Girl: “You should do your job!”
She added this assessment over her shoulder after hearing me chuckle to her mother about my beginner falls.
“You must not be very good.”
